Trevor's Trash

Updated: Mar 13, 2022

This is my take on the Southern staple called "Alabama Fire Crackers"; it is a sweet and savory crowd pleaser that you can enjoy anytime, anywhere!

Reader's note

The perfect sweet and savory snack to bring to any party. It takes about ~1-2 hours overall and yields multiple servings.

This is a recipe I've adapted from my mom and one that she adapted from Southern tradition. We have VERY different versions...I'll post hers one day! Years ago, I made this for my friend and her mom when I was visiting them in Nantucket. It was a hit! After the trip, I shared the recipe and they named it "Trevor's Trash" and have made it for many of their own family and friends. I was so touched to hear that one of their friends now makes it as a Christmas treat for her friends every year.

As always, please share feedback or suggestions. If you make this meal, tag me on Instagram at @TexasCookingCityLiving!

Ingredients

Crackers

  • 2 sleeves of saltines (usually the box comes with 4 so you can easily double this recipe)

  • Canola oil to cover

  • 1 packet of dry ranch mix

  • Chili flakes to taste

  • Garlic powder to taste

  • 2 sealable plastic bags

Cashews

  • 1 bag of unsalted, unroasted cashews

  • Canola oil to cover

  • Brown sugar to cover

  • Rosemary to taste

  • Chili flakes to taste

  • Garlic powder to taste

Directions

Okay - this is where my "to taste" can get tricky. I am a true believer that if you have good ingredients, you adjust and turn some flavors up or down based on your taste preferences. This recipe is the biggest example of that. If you like spicy, add more chili flakes. If you like garlic, keep that shaker shaking! This recipe is truly what you make it.

For the crackers, add saltines to a large sealable plastic bag. Add a couple splashes of canola oil to lightly cover the saltines. Then, add dry ranch mix, chili flakes and garlic powder. Shake the plastic bag! Let marinate while you make the cashews.

For the cashews, pre-heat oven to 375. Mix cashews in a bowl with canola oil, chili flakes, garlic powder, rosemary and brown sugar. Add to pan (make sure they aren't too crowded) and bake for about 20 minutes or until done. Let cool and add to the cracker bag. Enjoy!
